I recently went back to El Salvador after 26 years, and it was amazing to see my family again and visit beautiful places like the famous surfer beach, El Tunco. We tried as much local food as we could, and one place really stood out—El Kraken in Santiago Nonualco, La Paz. It’s a hidden spot inside a house, and the food was so delicious. I highly recommend it! Check out what I ate—it was so good!

I can share that my fondest memories of El Salvador took place during the summer of 2021. I was able to explore the country with my wife’s family, and eat all of the delicious food that I would only hear Salvadoran people talk about. In the city of Olocuilta I was able to eat Pupusas until my heart, soul, and stomach were satisfied. I was worried because of the violence and media portrayal of El Salvador, but was pleasantly surprised when every area I visited was patrolled by multiple military service members armed with automatic rifles watching over the people and their belongings. I truly felt safe, and not one tattooed gang member was seen during the 2 weeks I was in the country.

My fondest memories of El Salvador took place in my childhood home. Having been able to visit recently allowed me to relive those memories in the safety that president Nayib Bukele has brought to El Salvador. I was able to visit my old home, friends, family, and even explore beautiful coffee plantations that were not safely accessible because of the gang violence that existed when I was a child.
